Sycon quadrangulatum (Calcareous Sponges) Calcareous sponges are a type of sponge that has spicules made out of calcium carbonate. The sponge's spicules often cover its body wall. There are 150 know species of calcareous sponges and they are usually only a few inches long.
They function by having a constant flow of water through themselves. Through this flow of water, they can obtain needed oxygen and nutrients, and dispels waste. |
