Euplectella aspergillum (Glass Sponge) The glass sponges are commonly found in deep ocean. They are primarily composed of syncitial (glass) tissue, extensive regions of multinucleate cytoplasm. Glass sponges flourished in the Jurassic to Cretaceous (201-66 Ma) periods. During this time reeds of these sponges began to build up.
Like most sponges, it obtains its nutrients, oxygen, and get rid of waste though a constant flow of water through itself. In other words, it has a water based circulatory system. |
