Porifera Porifera are multicellular organisms commonly known as sponges. Their bodies are full of pores which allows water to pass through their bodies. Today there are about 5000 to 10,000 of species of Porifera. Out of those species, only 150 of them live in fresh water. The rest of the sponges live in salt-water.
History Sponges are very primitive creatures that evolved around 500 million years ago. The shapes and colors in which sponges come in are wide and varied.
